New Profit exists to build a bridge between these leaders and a community of philanthropists who are committed to catalyzing their impact. ABOUT CATALYZE - UNLOCKED FUTURES
Launched in 2017, New Profit’s Unlocked Futures aims to increase visibility, remove barriers to capital, and build community with social entrepreneurs and communities who have been directly impacted by the American legal system. These barriers—including lack of access to formal job training, limited housing options, and hiring restrictions due to criminal records—leave 60 percent of formerly incarcerated individuals unemployed one year after their release, contributing to the recidivism cycle that damages so many communities. Unlocked Futures aims to open the opportunity equation and remove barriers to entrepreneurship for people whose experience with the American legal system provides them with unmatched expertise and insight into how we build alternatives to incarceration and improve the current system.

In 2024, Unlocked Futures is seeking to invest in 8 innovative leaders impacted by the American legal system. 

INVESTING AND CAPACITY BUILDING AT NEW PROFIT
New Profit stands shoulder-to-shoulder with social entrepreneurs in support of their vision, with a specific focus on helping them build the capacity of their organizations in four areas: 1) Impact 2) Equity & Proximity, 3) Adaptive Leadership, and 4) Sustainability. 

Unlocked Futures offers a synergistic support model to work with and towards the needs of each organization, creating value across several dimensions. This includes a peer learning community in each cohort, 1:1 leadership development support for the social entrepreneur, consultations with external content experts, and New Profit’s tested capacity building framework and tools, as well as $100,000 in unrestricted support.

NEW PROFIT SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
New Profit encourages you to consider an internship with us if you are interested in contributing to and learning about the inner workings of an innovative, equity-centered, national venture philanthropy organization. We have loved the influence, support, and energy of our interns over the years and are excited to select and welcome another cohort! Our internships are placed in various parts of our organization, but each opportunity offers exposure to an aspect of program, external affairs, or operational management to help you develop skills, knowledge, and relationships that ideally aid your career path. Our summer internship program will be 20-30 hours per week and will go from June 3rd to August 30th. Each selected participants salary will be based on experience and it is non-negotiable. POSITION DESCRIPTION
New Profit seeks to engage a curious, detail-oriented, and collaborative intern to undertake projects related to investment selection for Unlocked Future. As a Summer Intern you will work closely with the Unlocked Futures Investment Selection team and external partners to support investment selection for Unlocked Futures. Work will include analysis of the investment selection process and the broader ecosystem in partnership with the Unlocked Futures team. You should have an interest in racial equity, social entrepreneurship, criminal justice and philanthropy.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Investment Selection

• Support application review, and diligence for prospective investments for the Unlocked Futures portfolio;
• Assess organizations on leadership, impact, commitment to and work in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion, organizational capacity for growth, and overall fit with New Profit;
• Provide support and insight throughout the decision making process; 
• Supporting the preparation of analysis and materials related to Unlocked Futures investment selection; and
• Partner with Investment Selection Lead and other members of the Unlocked Futures team to drive ecosystem analysis and insight generation to share with the field.

American Legal System Landscape Analysis

• Research trends in philanthropic funding to Social Entrepreneurs that have been impacted by the American legal system, including insight into specific funders   
• Draft a report that speaks to Unlocked Futures position within the field of philanthropy relative to other initiatives funding systems impacted leaders  
• Develop recommendations for how Unlocked Futures can continue to position its funding for greater impact to improve or abolish the current legal system 

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

• Committed to racial equity and with an interest in criminal justice, social entrepreneurship, venture philanthropy;
• Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and effectively prioritize time and tasks;
• Creative, learning-oriented problem solver; 
• Excellent research and analytical skills
• Highly organized and detail-oriented; 
• Collaborative team player; 
• Engaging, clear verbal and written communication skills; and
• Mastery of  Google Suite and Microsoft Office programs specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Available to work 20-30 hours per week between June 3rd to August 30 (Note - New Profit will be closed for our Summer Rejuvenation Break  July 1 - July 10, 2024, so there will be no work during that time)
